The Albray and Foxall Families–A Strong ConnectionHenry Albray FoxallHenry Albray Foxall was born at Hardway, Alverstoke on 27th June 1869, the illegitimate son of Esther Rhoda Foxall. He was baptised as Henry Aubrey Foxhall on 1st August 1869 at St John the Evangelist, Forton, Gosport. The address given at the time of his baptism was 2 Mill Lane, Forton, the house where Henry Albray’s family were living. The forenames he was given at birth match up with Ancestry DNA tests that prove beyond any shadow of doubt his father was indeed Henry Albray. Esther Rhoda Foxall was born on 20th November 1850, and baptised on 5th January 1851 at St Thomas, Elson. She was the daughter of Thomas Foxall and his second wife, Ann Jones née Cleverley who were married on 6th July 1845 at St Mary, Alverstoke. 1851 Census:

Esther also had an illegitimate daughter, Charlotte Amelia Foxall, who was evidently named after Esther’s younger sister. She was born at Hardway on 8th January 1872, and was baptised as Charlotte Amelia Slade on 7th February 1875 at St John the Evangelist, Forton, the family address being given as 4 Cobden Street. One thing that is for certain is that Henry Albray was not the father of Charlotte Amelia Foxall. The reason why I can be so certain of this is that rather than being in his home area nine months before Esther gave birth, the 1871 Census (which was taken on the night of 2nd April) shows Henry aboard the vessel HMS Immortalité, the ship’s co-ordinates being given as 16°30’N 67°33’W, just south of Puerto Rico in the Caribbean Sea. In fact, the ship’s log shows that it was away from the UK from 8th January 1871 and didn’t return to Portsmouth until 11th September 1871. When Esther Foxhall was twenty-four years old, she married a twenty-five year old Mariner named George Slade. Their marriage took place on 25th May 1874 At St John the Evangelist, Forton, in the presence of Henry Gould and Ellie Gould. 1881 Census

The family’s address at the time of Ada’s baptism was given as Jamaica Place.
